Grottaglie is one of the most populated municipalities in the province of Taranto; it is known for its traditional production of artistic ceramics. Its location is perfectly in the centre between the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi.

Known for its vineyards, Grottaglie is not only known as the 'City of Ceramics' but also as the 'City of Grapes'.

The origin of Grottaglie lies in the settlements that have taken place in the area since the Palaeolithic, and in particular in the area of Riggio and Pezza Petrosa. According to some, it is considered the birthplace of the father of Latin literature Quinto Ennio.

An important Byzantine site in the Grottaglie area is the Gravina di Riggio, which features high-quality Basilian frescoes.

The town is located on the slope of a hill in the Murge called Monte Samuele Pizzuto in the hinterland of Taranto and at the southern end of the Murgia dei trulli (Murgia of the Trulli) which includes the vast territory that stretches from Matera to Grottaglie itself, passing by Martina Franca in the Itria Valley and Villa Castelli on the slopes of the Murge. It rises on a territory marked by the presence of ravines, on the sides of which many caves have been dug; in fact, the centre is completely excavated in the tuff, as evidenced by the Cave di Fantiano (now an open-air theatre where the International Festival Musica Mundi of ethnic and popular music takes place every year).

Grottaglie, due to its territory, culture, art and dialect, is one of the municipalities in the province of Taranto that are part of the Salento; in particular, the town is located in the area called North Salento.
